apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Design Board: ABC's for renters

DESIGNBOARD450.jpg
Since this month's theme on AT:SF is Reversible Décor for renters, I wanted to share one of the ways in which I've decked out my apartment, without upsetting the landlords.

I thought hard on this one and looking around my place it was obvious to me that what defines a lot of the personality of my rooms is my artwork and accessories. When you can't paint, what better way to infuse life into a room? These objects tell the real story of who I am and what I love. Family mementos, photographs and little vignettes of collectibles that represent my heart and soul.

When I can't get to the flea market, one of the many places I go to seek vintage finds is Timeless Treasures on Sutter Street in lower Pacific Heights. It's tucked away off the beaten path of Fillmore Street, but well worth the visit.

My first impression of Timeless Treasures was that I had perhaps stumbled upon some kind of crazy alphabet museum.

EST GOOD FOOD.jpg
Everywhere you look there's a word spelled out in various, eclectic, vintage letters, so there's plenty of inspiration. Owner Joan O'Connor is an outgoing, enthusiastic proprietor who will engage you in cheerful conversation the moment you enter the store. She imports much of the store's collection from Paris flea markets and there seems to be a story behind every piece.
Letters have fashionably come and gone, but done right, and I believe, minimally, they still have their place. I think they're unique accessories and make great, personal gifts for good friends, family or maybe even a party favor. My office hosted a holiday dinner and used our initials as funky place settings, which was visually interesting and totally personal. We all got to keep them and I loved it.
BIG V.jpg
I brought mine home and have added to the collection from the many "V's" (for Victoria) available at Timeless Treasures.
WHITE V.jpg
I've pulled all my white letters together and my favorite sparkling 'V' and created this little display. I love this look, and it reminds me that a good rule of thumb is to keep like objects together - that way it looks more pulled together and less cluttered.
DOG.jpg
In one of my first visits, Joan convinced me to buy letters spelling out 'Love my Dog'. I'm not sure how she did it, but then she kindly threw in a large, black metal 'V' for my collection. Nice touch.
V.jpg
I added this 'V' to my collection of black pottery, black coral against my black chalkboard and it looks quite dramatic.
BLUE GLASSES.jpg
Joan also collects vintage glassware from all over, of impeccable quality and grand in color scheme.
GLASSWARE.jpg
I've found gorgeous old glasses that I love to leave out on display; there's no reason to hide them away! The funky pitcher is from Timeless Treasures; I added some contemporary orange tumblers and it makes a fun, retro display in my open kitchen shelves.
BRIDESMAIDS.jpg
There's also antique furniture, carved wooden Madonnas, vintage artwork and knickknacks. If it's eclectic and unusual; it's probably here.
EIFFEL TOWERS.jpg
I got these vintage Eiffel Towers here and added them to my collection of tin boxes, cable car and Golden Gate Bridge souvenirs.
B IS FOR BATH.jpg
And I hung a sparkling "B" in, big surprise, the bathroom.
LIBRARY.jpg
Everything is very well organized and displayed at Timeless Treasures. You can clearly see its future place in your home, on your shelves, all spelled out...

This is fabulous ... I wish I still lived in San Francisco! You've done a great job of working these pieces into your decor (LOVE the B in the bathroom)

Anyone from the New York boards know a place like this here to recommend?? I never do make it to the flea markets ...

WOW! I LOVE! I LOVE!
Thanks for sharing this with us.
I really wish there was a store like this in/around NYC. I'm only able to find vintage letters at flea markets or street fairs and it's very rare and very expensive.
Ooooh, I'm so jealous!

Thanks so much guys. For those of you in NYC, or anywhere else other than SF, I'm pretty sure Joan, the shop's owners takes phone requests and will seek out what you're looking for. Drop into her website and give her a shout.

Cheers!

Victoria,

where did you get that great little bud vase/glass that's holding your bamboo sprout?

Ana - I wish I could tell you, but it was a gift from my friend Lisa Coris. If you check my blog there's a link to her site. If you write her I'm sure she can fill you in.

While visiting SF in Sept I saw a display box at my hotel done by Timeless Treasures and in it was a lovely vintage alphabet stamp set. I noted the address and went to their store on Sutter. The girl minding the store couldn't get the set out in time but she mailed it to me the next week. Charming store, excellent service!

This shop is a mecca for those of us who understand that letters and numbers have their own aesthetic appeal, without having to spell a single word. But hey, if you do want to spell something, you can buy all the letters here at Timeless Treasures.

I went there for the first time today, it's a literal treasure trove! Resting on top of the shelves of larger letters (pictured in the above photo) is a big cabinet with separate drawers for all the smaller-sized letters and numbers. Prices start at $1 so there's something for everyone's budget. More bins are scattered throughout the store that are filled with rubberstamp, letterpress, and metal numbers.

This shop is yet another reason why I love this city. Go see for yourself: Take the 22 or 38 bus to Fillmore and Geary (then walk 3 blocks), or park for free on Sundays (they'll be open the next three Sundays during the holiday season).
