#36 - Chrisy+Patrick: The Green Room

Name: Chrisy+Patrick
Location: Santa Rosa
Type: 3-Bedroom Condo / Owned

Why I use color:

I use color because Navajo White is very, very depressing. . .
Really, I use color because I am a highly visual person, and it's a fabulous way to show (off) your personality. I have a very in-your-face sense of style, and strong color is a great way to get that across. On that note however, it's very easy to go to the paint store and buy a can of red paint, but the trick is getting the RIGHT red, or the right orange, not too bright, not too muddy, etc. . . .

. . .I have been painting bold colors in my rooms for as long as I can remember -- when I was around 12 years old, I painted my room "Flamingo Pink" with wild white stripes on some of the walls (were my parents crazy)??? Turns out, green has been the universal winner for me.

Color is Powerful (does that make power colorful)?

2 good color tips:

1. Look closely. Great color is everywhere. Old dishes, broken tile, faded book covers, green apples, a bottle of Pellegrino, vintage clothing, vegetables, bubblegum. . .I could go on. . .

2. When choosing colors, my advice is: Love it or change it.

2 good color resources:

1. I always look at packaging. Labels, cans, boxes, bags, and my favorite: gift wrap; are all fun color resources.

2. Pantone Color Swatch books. And Crayons.

Hey Chrisy-
Thanks for the vote of green confidence (see Midwest #52)! I laughed when I read your tips & resources because they are so much like my own! Haha, I laugh again. Good luck in the contest. Your room is girly, styled, funky, chic, and simply very nice.

What FUN -- your room & color design ROCKS !

Thanks so much for sharing.

Need to edit and focus. This is not a sophisticated use of color, nor even fun. And enough with that green!

I have no problem with the color green you've chosen. In fact, I like it. I, too, always seem to fall back on shades of green and have for many years. I do wish that the pictures were a little brighter so we could get a better idea of how everything looks together. I'm also unsure of whether or not this is the same room decorated differently in each shot. Regardless, I love the stretched fabric hanging above your couch in the second photo and think that the yellow/gold curtains hanging from the ceiling rather than above the window itself have a big impact.

oh my god, whoever keeps posting as "no": We get it, you don't like anything, and no one is any tasteful or sophisticated as you. If you can't offer any constructive criticism then save your prissy, self-important comments for when the proctologist pulls the ENORMOUS STICK OUT OF YOUR ASS.

Chrisy & Patrick: I couldn't live with that strong a color, but I like how much the green and fuschia pop, especially in the bright light. It looks like a fun and happy place to live.

I think they are different rooms (or different parts of the room) since the curtain rod is at different height in the two images. I love the way the color plays off different themes in the two images: green with pink in the very playful eating area, and the same green interplaying with a more dusky rose in the relaxing area. I can imagine a bubbly and animated dinner in the firt room, followed by a more mellow relaxation time in the living area. I, too, would like to see brighter images that would pop a bit more, but even with these I can see the energy in the green walls that are lively, yet not so neon that they would create a barrier between host and guest, the sort of "you're-either-with-me-or-against-me" strong color that some artists put on their walls. I like this.

My gosh, I love this space! Hope I say this the right way: you have that ability to successfully put things together that would look awful if someone else used the exact same items. Everytime I look at the pictures, my eye finds a new place of color to land on. There's so much going on but it somehow works so well and coordinates fabulously! Though it is very feminine, does Patrick have a more masculine room in the house ;)? I also want to know if it is the same room or two different rooms? The matching paint and that white bookcase is throwing off perspective. Thanks for sharing your home, it's very unique and has it's own personality without looking Ikea or West Elm or Brocade or yadayada, you get it. Love it. Insta.

It's sweet and simultaneously fun.
It makes me crave chinese take out and martini chasers.

I really like the combination of that green with the pinks, with white accents. I also like the floral motif you have. Although I find it far more floaty and feminine than I would ever choose, I think it works in your space.

As far as being critical... I think you could edit down your accessories. Some of them feel out of step with the rest of the room, and I find them distracting (e.g. the plaid pillows on the bench - which seem neither comfortable nor practical).

This is my favorite room so far.... the use of color is electric yet calming , this space seems perfect for a sunday paper read, or a cocktail party with flair!!!!

Lily, you might want to calm down. The constructive critcism was there: edit and focus.

To No,

Define sophisticated and fun use of color?

To each his own. Focus.

SUPER FUN! I couldn't knock anyone's personal choices, but this is absolutely GREAT!
No need for "no" here!

I think it's cool- lots of color, but doesn't look cluttered. Love the bench seating.

I'm from Santa Rosa, too! :O)

I think you have a really lovely home!!

I really love this one. Pink is my obsession and you display it so well off the pink foundation. This looks like a fun place to live.

Wow...I love it! It's sophisticated and eclectic. It reminds me of Palm Beach but fun!

Insta Finalist! I love the color, actually I love all the colors. It's so fun, but it's still sophisticated! The big painting in the first pic really ties all the colors together. The runner on the table is a great way to add color to the plain white, and I like all the flowers. This place is really a home and a beautiful one at that!

posted by Amanda on 2006-10-23 18:22:45

While this is not what I expected for "fall colors" ... who really cares? It's gorgeous... easily deserves its insta-finalist vote! Wow! Love, love, love it!

This green thing is really getting to some folks I guess?>??

Calm... it'll be fine.

I LOVE This room!
The colors are so romantic and they make me feel happy :)

Also, this room feels lived in and loved. Not like a catalog photo.

These people obviously decorate to please themselves and not the supposed "norm"

Good job, I would love to live in this space!

Uh oh, somebody finally found a color that does NOT go with lime green...

Chrisy n Patrick ~ Luv your place!! It's lively, fun, and I smiled looking at the photos. Sadly, not everyone appreciates certain style or color. I say enjoy your space and thanks for inspiring me to want to break away from the boring blah -same 'ol follow the leader look - you guys know who I'm talking 'bout. Daring to be different and not following the norm is what makes good design.

posted by cielo on 2006-10-24 05:43:46

Insta-Finalist! What can I say? It's a great use of color and you always seem to know where to place simple objects and graduate them into art.

posted by Paulo on 2006-10-23 20:16:22

hello all you cuties...

Thanks for all the great things you have to say about our house! Um....it is the same room, from the same angle. The "pink curtain" room is the way it was set up for dinner party we had during the summer. The "gold curtain" room is right now. I change things constantly. Patrick does not have a more masculine room-maybe the kitchen. Oh-wait-that's fuscia pink (with a chandelier),so maybe not. He's is out-numbered by girls (me + 2 little ones).

Our ceilings are 25 feet high, and white just would not cut it. BUT-I had NO IDEA that green was so overused, and that so many people might tear their eyes out upon seeing it.

We still love it! thanks again!

goodness it's almost like which room do I prefer more! I love both-- but oddly i like the "girly" dining room setup because the use of pink/fuschia is gutsy. I'd love that room more if the console under the painting was gone completely, but that's just me I think judging from the comments. Where did you get that awesome dining table and chairs?

posted by saya on 2006-10-24 10:07:17

I bet there was a big, bright, beautiful ((cake)) at that dinner party, and had I recieved an invitation I would have been there in a second! Looks like an exciting place to enjoy food and drinks with friends while supplying plenty of topic for conversation. I really like the living room set-up. I agree, it offers just enough visual stimulation while maintaining a calming effect. You can decorate my place anytime!

posted by shellyD on 2006-10-25 09:41:22

This one beats out all competition! It's happy and gorgeous, full of life and color, but not over the top. I could live in the green room! Truly awesome!

posted by Joanna on 2006-10-25 09:45:58

Saya-

the table and all the chairs are thrift store finds! The "bench" seating is a sturdy coffee table we used for the dinner party. Thanks for your sweet comments! I might post some better & brighter pictures on flickr...

luscious environments...easy to picture cozying up with friends at the table, or on the couch with a good book...and obviously cheerful on a gloomy day...very inviting.
has inspired to re-do my place, thank you!
my favorite so far, and the only one I have bothered to comment on.......

There is SO MUCH going on in these rooms- and yet-I still really love it.

Unexpected colour combinations here....and the yellow curtains compliment the green walls as the red cushions reflect the armchair's colour.

Lovely.

Such a skillful mesh of stuff, such a skillful collection of color. Very lush, very beautiful. Well done. LOVE the art above the console in the first pic.

Hi Alana-

the name of the paint is NEW ORLEANS-I looked at every possible green paint made before picking this one. I got it at True Value Hardware.

Let me know if you need any other info.
Thank you!
