Firefly Lamp by Aaron R. Thomas

7-10-firefly lamp.jpg

We know there are those of you who already have your fingers on your keyboard, ready to comment (again) about how much you hate lamps without shades.

We don't care. We just want to imagine Aaron R. Thomas' Firefly Lamp with its five miniature "fireflies," the only light in our darkened home, on a warm summer night, when all our windows and doors are open and we can hear the crickets chirping outside. . .

OK, I won't say it. ;-> Since these aren't a true light source per say I could deal with these. Fireflies were one of the things I liked about summers in Maryland... Never did try catching them though.

It's accent lighting -- totally different from a lamp-lamp that would be throwing 250 watts in one's face.

It's also steeply discounted, which has more effect on aesthetic principles than I'd like to admit.

OK - the reason I don't like bare bulb lighting comes from my photography background more than anything else.

Bare bulb lighting if done with care can make good photographs and some great people specialized in it.

In general though, bare bulb lighting casts harsh, hard shadows that are unflattering to almost everybody, not to mention being very difficult to photograph well (since the dynamic range of film and electronic sensors is a lot lower than what our eyes can discern - which is why the photos taken on the surface of the moon have no stars in them).

So that's why I don't like bare bulbs. That and they always remind me of "B" grade detective films where the bad guy is hiding out in some filthy sleazy hotel with a bare bulb on a cord.

This one I could like. I wouldn't pay a hundred bucks for it, but it's not bad.

And here I just find bare bulbs annoying... I'm so... frivolous...
