This is a great idea that someone should have thought of sooner. Modular wood deck tile for outdoor spaces. A perfect solution for a small balcony with an uninviting floor or a yard that needs a little TLC before it can be enjoyed as an urban paradise, especially if you're renting and don't want to invest time or money in something custom-built. These could also be used to give a section of your bathroom floor a quick makeover.
These wooden tiles will drain and have a weather-resistant stain. A set of four 18" square tiles is $99.
Available at West Elm.

I've been trying to come to some kind of solution for the remainder of my deck problem. I put down redwood decking tiles similar to the ones shown here and before I could complete the job the product was discontinued. I've seen these in the WE catalog but the price is outrageous. I need 30 more tiles to finish the job and that would end up costing me $800! And I already have over half of the balcony done! I can't imagine using these for much of anything at that price but they sure look good.
Anne, could you buy redwood material and make the necessary tiles?
What I've been thinking of doing is making a platform roughly 6" high and use wood planks to complete the job. It's the only way I can come up with that will make the transition from redwood tiles to planking without loooking like I ran out of tiles. I'm still running this over in my mind.
anne- ikea has something really similar for a lot less..http://tinyurl.com/juhqa
also, there's another company that sells a similar product, a little smaller- www.ecowoodcalifornia.com
I saw that in Target's garden dept, they carry some too...
I was also going to suggest the IKEA Platta decking tiles, but jon beat me to it. Good deal at $6.99/ea. But if you can wait until the end of the summer season, I remember that they were deep-discounted to $.75/ea last year.
I was at IKEA on Sunday and asked for them. As it turns out they only had 4 tiles left and won't be getting anymore until next March. (a seasonal item)
This is the second year in a row that I've gone out there just for those tiles only to find they've, once again, come and gone. I did look at the 4 they had and wasn't too crazy about them in person but if they had a bunch of them I probably would have bought them. So the problem persists.
I spent almost all day yesterday looking online for alternatives. I found a couple of sites that had something similar but nothing that matches. The cheapest I could find was $8 a tile which brings the cost to $240 if I decided to go with those. This is one of them:

Anne,
I have been searching as well. Do you have any other suggestions? The color os Ezydeck doesn't work for my small patio.
Thanks!
Randi, I googled balcony decking and got a lot of different sites. Do that and see if there's anything there that works better for you.
This is wonderful for renters! Thank you for posting this fab find.

Smith and Hawken has teak squares.
They have. The Romans, yes those guys, had this around there bath structures.
Andree - thank you! I missed that in my websearch and that may be the ones I order. They aren't exactly like mine but I should be able to incorporate them into the existing tiles.
Hi,
My store has just recently begun carrying Ipe wood tiles. They are 12x12 and click together like legos with a sturdy plastic frame. The nice thing about the Ipe wood tiles is that that are virtually indestructable. They will not fade or warp and can be used outdoors or in (we have ours displayed as a shower pan).
There are more of these coming to the market at widly different prices, so you just want to make sure that they are decent quality. The better tiles use thick plastic framing, brass screws (that don't rust), and a hard tropical wood. Steer clear of any tiles that are glued together, they will fail quickly. Our tiles sell for $16 a square.
Cheers,
Nuno

I just bought some wooden tiles like these at IKEA this weekend for $6.99 each. They are great on my bathroom floor and better then standing on the plain concrete or a rug that collects cat hair.
You could also try the 12" x 12" Ipe tiles available at www.swiftdek.com which I think are araound $8.40 per tile and also have plastic backing. They also have an online store.
I found these tiles in several wood species at www.thedeckingoutlet.com , it appears this is the only deck tile that has a 5 year warranty and is of good quality. Another thing I liked is that these deck tiles are all from certified hardwoods. I called them and they are always available and they are heavily stocked.
